How do tipping bucket rain gauges measure rainfall?

In many cases, the rainfall data monitored by the meteorological department is less than 20 mm, which has not yet reached the standard of heavy rain, let alone heavy rain. Even if the rainfall reaches 20 mm, which meets the standard of short-term heavy rainfall (1 hour rainfall ≥ 20 mm), it is still not heavy rain. If the rainfall is less than 10 mm, it is light rain at best. Obviously, this is contrary to the perception that people judge the amount of rainfall by the priority of the rain and the size of the raindrops. Therefore, sometimes pouring rain is not necessarily heavy rain, and pattering is not necessarily light rain. The level of rainfall is based on data.

For rainfall statistics, use a rain gauge to measure. With the development of sensors and Internet of Things technology, the use of high-precision tipping bucket rain gauges to monitor rainfall has become the main method of rainfall measurement. Based on this, SenTec developed the SEM400 series of double-tipping bucket rain gauges on the basis of traditional tipping bucket rain gauges. The inner diameter of the rain opening is 200mm. With a more accurate measurement error of ≤±2%, it reaches the accuracy class I standard; Output 485 type or pulse type signal with 0.2mm/0.1mm resolution. The equipment consists of a rain gauge shell, a rain opening, a funnel, a tipping bucket support, an upper tipping bucket rainfall adjusting bracket, and a rain gauge base. The core part of the tipping bucket adopts a three-dimensional streamlined design and is made of stainless steel, which makes the tipping bucket turn more smoothly, and has the function of self-cleaning dust and easy cleaning.

1. The integrated positioning structure of the double tipping bucket rain gauge is easy to install
Different from other tipping bucket rain gauges, the tipping bucket bushing of the double tipping bucket rain gauge is an integrated positioning structure, and the tipping bucket is installed in the bearing through the tipping bucket shaft, and there is no need to install the internal structure on site. At the same time, do some red paint seal treatment on the inclination screw. When installing the instrument on site, the user only needs to adjust the horizontal bubble to the center position according to the relevant requirements of the manual. It is not necessary to adjust the inclination of the tipping bucket on site. Installation brings convenience.

The shell of the double tipping bucket rain gauge is made of 304 stainless steel to avoid the rust of the equipment caused by long-term rain impact and affect the sensitivity of the tipping bucket. Install mesh holes at the funnel to prevent debris such as leaves from blocking the downflow of rainwater and reduce errors caused by stagnant water. At the same time, the coupling distance between the magnetic steel and the reed switch when fixed, ensures that the signal output by the instrument has a definite proportional relationship with the number of times the tipping bucket is turned, so that the measured rainfall is more accurate.
