Oil pressure switch: how to change oil pressure switch ?

oil pressure switch definition

An oil pressure switch is a protection device. Universal oil pressure switch monitors the oil pressure and turns off or on a warning light or controls an oil pressure indicator.

Oil pressure switches types

We common used transmission oil pressure switch types like fuel pump oil pressure switch, generac oil pressure switch, hydraulic oil pressure switch etc.

What does the oil pressure switch do ?

Oil pressure switch usually used as a generator protection device, which is installed in the oil circuit of the engine. It monitors the oil pressure and turns off or on a warning light or controls an oil pressure indicator for logging and diagnostic purposes.

how an oil pressure switch works?

Take engine oil pressure switch as an example, When the ignition is switched on, the oil pressure warning light illuminates. When oil pressure is built up as the engine starts, the switch contact in the oil pressure switch opens and the ground contact for the warning light is interrupted. The warning light goes out. Of course, you can set it as normally closed oil pressure switch or normally open oil pressure switch.

oil pressure switch VS sensor

Here you may want to know what the difference between an oil pressure sensor switch or oil pressure sensor. Actually, Oil pressure switch is a type of oil pressure sensor. An oil pressure sensor is a device used to measure the oil pressure on an engine. Oil pressure sensor is actually a term that covers at least two different and distinct types of sensor – an oil pressure switch and and oil pressure sender.

oil pressure switch location

The oil pressure switch is usually located on the engine block, often near the oil filter, and warns the driver whenever the oil pressure gets too low by illuminating a red oil light in the instrument cluster.

oil pressure switch wiring diagram

According different design and wiring requirement, the oil pressure switch socket may be 1 pin, 2 pin, or 3 pin. Therefore, the engine oil pressure sensor switch circuit accordingly have 1 2 3 wire oil pressure switch wiring diagram. A sample wiring connect as follows:

3 bad oil pressure switch symptoms

1.Warning light is illuminated permanently or not at all
When the oil pressure switch gets damage due to any cause or doesn’t work properly then it shows the false reading on the infotainment system and warning light turns on even the oil level is normal.

2.Oil pressure indicator not operational
Sometimes if oil pressure switch doesn’t work properly, as a result, it gives a false reading and usually shows low oil levels on oil pressure indicator.

3.Oil leaks
One of the common problems is when the oil pressure switch leaking. The oil coming out of oil pressure switch or from the tread. The Oil pressure gauge read zero. If the oil leaks from the tread, your mechanic may recommend resealing it. If the sensor itself is leaking, it will have to be replaced.

Possible causes of Pressure switch failure

· Clogged inlet bore
· Contact failure on connector
· Internal short-circuits
· Damaged measuring element
· Loss of sealing

Troubleshooting

· Check connectors and wiring for proper fit or damage.
· Check housing for leaks.
· Check engine connections and switch flange for contamination.

How to replace the oil pressure switch ?

In most cases, oil pressure switch replacement cost is very low. you can also do it by yourself under professional guidance or by professionals
But for a general overview of what’s typically involved with replacing an oil pressure switch, you can refer below:

1.Open the hood and locate the oil pressure switch on the engine block.
2.Disconnect the electrical wire from the oil pressure switch.
3.Using an oil pressure switch socket, remove the switch from the engine block.
4.Apply sealant to the threads of the new oil pressure switch. Thread the new switch into the block by hand and then tighten the switch securely with the the oil pressure switch socket.
5.Connect the electrical wire to the new oil pressure switch.
6.Start the vehicle and check for oil leaks at the oil pressure switch. Verify the operation of the oil pressure gauge.
